Are dental x-rays safe?

Home / Dental Care / Are dental x-rays safe?

A common concern among patients is the safety of dental x-rays. As dentists, we always face these queries on safety and how often x-ray can be taken. The answer relies on severity of dental problems like decay or gum disease. Before recommending an x-ray, the associated risk factors and dental problems are always considered by the dentist. The leading dental surgeon in Pune explains why dental x-rays are recommended and also about safety aspects.
Why dental x-ray is necessary?
As mentioned above, dental x-rays are carried out to find out decay problems that are deep between the teeth, under the fillings or crowns and also in other hidden surfaces. Moreover dental x-rays are highly beneficial to identify bone loss, change in bone structure, infection, cysts, and also tumors. It also helps in fixing dental implants, braces and other such procedures. In short, when the intensity of decays, gum diseases or any other damages caused to the teeth cannot be visually identified during regular check-up, dental x-rays act as a diagnostic tool to diagnose dental problems. Armed with x-ray report, the required treatment can be easily planned by the dentist. This helps in early intervention and in prevention of further damage and aids in restoration of tooth. Frequency of ordering dental x-rays by dentists varies for each patient as it is completely based on the age of patients and risk factors of dental problems.
So what is the concern actually?
The general concern about x-rays is the radiation it causes. Patients are always worried that the radiation may cause cancer. The fact is that x-rays are safe when the exposure of radiation is low. In fact, the exposure to radiation in dental x-rays is lower than the radiation from environment. As dentists follow ALARA (As low as reasonably achievable) principle, the risk factor is always low.
The decision for the necessity of x-rays is purely based on condition of the problem and age of the patients. While some may require x-ray every five years, others may require every year. In case of children, frequent x- rays are required as the growth of teeth is a continuous process. When all the safety stipulations are thoroughly followed, x- rays are safe. Nevertheless, following factors are usually taken into account before taking dental x-ray:
• X-rays should be ordered only after dental examination. Professional dentists never order for an x-ray without clinical examination and also analyzing medical history of the patient.
• Using latest equipments and correct settings for adults and children results in safer use of x-rays. Taking one image instead of more images also reduces the risk of exposure. Hence only the professional and certified technicians are allowed to take x- rays.
• For pregnant ladies, x-rays are usually avoided other than emergencies. Even in case of emergencies, the level of radiation is highly decreased with the help of latest equipments and protective apron.
One of the best dentists in Pune reiterates that when the recommended guidelines are strictly followed there is no need to worry about cancer.
