Tooth extraction is a dental procedure in which tooth is removed or pulled from the dental socket in the alveolar bone. Dentists usually try to protect the teeth by root canal treatment, filling, crowns and any other possible treatment and only as a last resort, tooth extractions are performed. A leading dental surgeon in Pune explains the know how to get the ultimate care for tooth extraction.

In the first place, the dentist should be experienced and specialized in tooth extraction and it goes without saying the dentist should be oral and maxillofacial surgeon. Only the specialized dentist would be able to decide appropriate treatment and render ultimate care. Of late, dental surgeons professionally perform both simple extractions and complex procedure with the aid of modern techniques under sterile environment.

The tooth extraction decision is usually made only after examination of the teeth through x-rays. Prior to the extraction procedure, various possibilities of saving the teeth are analyzed and adapted. But when the broken tooth or the tooth decay is beyond repair, or in the event of high possibility of the infection spreading to other areas in the mouth, then the dentists are left with no options other than to remove or extract the severely damaged tooth. Again, in few cases, tooth removal is also done for orthodontic treatment.

As a matter of fact, tooth extraction is a simple extraction procedure if the tooth is clearly visible in the mouth. It is extracted by loosening the tooth and pulled with the help of forceps. The procedure is complex and necessitates surgery only when the tooth is impacted or anchored in the dental socket and has not erupted or broken along the gum line. Sometimes, sectioning of tooth is required in which tooth are cut into sections and removed as individual section.

During the extraction procedure, the patient may feel the pressure while removing the tooth from the socket but will not feel the pain as the area around the extraction is numbed with the help of anesthesia. It is quite normal to experience bleeding after the extraction. Hence, gauze pads are placed to stop bleeding and they are frequently changed until the bleeding stops. To aid in quick healing process, the patients are generally asked to avoid smoking or any kind of tobacco use. Instructions about swishing warm water with salt, brushing, rinsing, ice packs and food to be taken are clearly provided by the dentists to the patients for speedy recovery. Religiously following all the aftercare instructions of the surgeon would definitely provide comfort during the healing process. Pain killers and antibiotics may be provided to combat pain and infection.

Some extractions may require stitches which may dissolve over the time or may be removed in the clinic by dentist after few days. The healing process would be regularly monitored by the dentist during the follow up appointments. And finally, patients need not worry of tooth loss after removal. Bridges and dental implants are always available as options for tooth replacement.

Before extraction, patients are advised to get all their queries clarified with the surgeon. An expert and experienced surgeon would gladly clear the patient’s doubts and always ensure to make them comfortable before any procedure. Patients should also ensure about other facilities and services so that they can opt for replacement of extracted tooth through bridges or dental implants.
