In the fast-paced world of today, our food habits have become inconsistent, our work life hectic and personal life frenzied. With disproportionate work-life balance, we are surrounded by various stresses that not only affects our psychological well-being but also our biological health.

From having minor gastrointestinal problems to suffering from severe health problems like diabetes, high blood pressure, stress has become the true 21st-century cause of various diseases. As a popular conviction goes that stress is just a feeling or ‘it will just go away’, stress is actually a built-in physiological response to a threat. When stressed, your body responds simultaneously. Your bloodstream is flooded with hormones like cortisol and adrenaline and if you’re chronically stressed, these physiologic changes will lead to health problems over time.

Just like any other part of the body, your mouth is also affected by chronic stress and cause various problems if it goes unchecked. Just like one experiences mood swings when stressed, the same swings can appear in your bodily chemicals that can lead to numerous oral health problems.

Grinding and Clenching

If you experience your teeth to be more sensitive and flatter on the tips than before, there are chances that you might be clenching or grinding your teeth in sleep or unconsciously. This can also lead to a sore jaw and how serious your problem is, only the dentist can determine. In order to prevent you from damaging your teeth, your doctor might recommend a mouth guard to prevent clenching.

Dry Mouth

If you are taking any medications to control stress, there is a possibility that you might experience dry mouth as these prescriptions might have that effect on your oral health. Stress can also cause you to breathe more from your mouth and the incoming air can lead to drier mouth. This can expose you to risk of cavities and make normal functions like chewing and swallowing difficult.
While drinking water and using mouthwash can give you temporary relief, you need to see a doctor to figure out the underlying cause of your condition.

Canker Sores

While it can be a cause of normal incidents like brushing too hard or chewing your tongue or cheeks, research has indicated that stress can also trigger canker sore or mouth ulcers. Causing pain in your gums, canker sores are one of the most common oral problems caused due to stress. While home remedies can relieve you from the pain temporarily, you need to consult a dentist if you experience severe canker sores.
